Sva 5
This SVA 5 was transformed into a two-seater (replacing the SVA 10 prototype destroyed during testing) to allow Gabriele D’Annunzio to take part in the famous flight over Vienna on August 9th 1918. The plane was decorated with the Big Dipper constellation painted on the tail fin, while the 87th Squadron, known as the “Serenissima”, had a personalised logo that was different to the usual one. The plane is preserved at the Vittoriale. The images show a photograph signed by Gabriele D’Annunzio on board an SVA 5 before taking off for the historical feat, a facsimile of the many leaflets dropped on the Austrian capital and a stamp commemorating for the poet.
