Spad XIII

During World War I the SPAD-XIII was the backbone of fighter planes in France, re-establishing the balance with more recent German planes. The one shown here belonged to the 94th Aero Squadron of the U.S. Air Service. This plane, No. 4523, was flown by Captain E.V. Rickenbacker who had 26 kills. In this photograph he is seen next to his SPAD-XIII, with a poster encouraging young Americans to enlist in the U.S. contingent sent to Europe during World War I.
