Nieuport 17
This Nieuport 17 was one of the fighter planes used by the Royal Italian Air Force at the beginning of the war. The Ni 17 appeared at the front on May 2nd, 1916, with the Escadrille number 57, allowing the Allies to put an end to the supremacy of German Fokker monoplanes armed with synchronised machineguns and it proved to be an important military asset especially in the Battle of the Somme. The “Super Bébé” was flown by many squadrons in the French, Italian, Russian, American and Belgian air forces, as well as those of a number of neutral countries such as the Netherlands, Finland and Switzerland. The “Super Bébé” was flown by some of the most famous fighter pilot aces such as the Frenchmen Georges Guynemer, Jean Navarre and Charles Nungesser, the British Albert Ball, William Bishop (Canadian) and Edward Mannock (seen here as he leaves in his “Bébé” after setting fire to a German Draken), the Italian Franceso Baracca (seen here next to his “Super Bébé”), the Russian Ivan Kazakov, Belgians André Meulemeester, Francis Lacquet and Edmond Thieffy.
