Morane Saulnier

The “Bullet” seen here is the N type flown by the RFC (A.186) 60 Squadron in 1916 and flown by Lieutenant T.H. Bayetto. The machinegun is a non-synchronised Lewis and one can see on the propeller blades metallic wedges used to deflect bullets should they hit it. This system was invented and applied by Roland Garros, the famous French fighter pilot considered a World War I ace and seen in this photograph. Coins were minted in his honour and the tennis centre at which the very famous French open is played was named after him and is known as the Roland Garros.
